For today's weed news we go to the great nation of Canada.
A recent study published in the Journal of Neuroscience has concluded that CBD or cannabidiol can effectively counteract the paranoia experienced by those who might have consumed too much THC.
Canadian scientists, working with rats as their proverbial guinea pigs, were able to isolate one particular molecule in the hippocampus part of the rat's brain, that becomes stimulated by THC entering brain. This molecule is associated with emotions, learning and memory. It is also associated with feelings of anxiety, addictive behavior as well as depression and paranoia.
However, the scientists also noticed that when their lab rats received doses of cannabidiol along with the THC, the perceived anxiety and paranoia was greatly reduced.
Furthermore, the above-mentioned molecule, known as ERK, stayed at regular levels thanks to the cannabidiol. In other words, CBD counteracted the negative effects that the researchers noticed their lab rats experiencing when they received high doses of THC!
"Our findings have important implications for prescribing cannabis and long-term cannabis use. For example, for individuals more prone to cannabis-related side effects, it is critical to limit use to strains with high CBD and low THC content," said Steven Laviolette, one of the study's researchers.
"By co-administering CBD and THC, we completely reversed the direction of the change on a molecular level... CBD was able to reverse the anxiety-like behavior and addictive-like behavior caused by the THC, says lead author of the study Rodger Hudson.
One additional interesting detail worth noting, is that these researchers did not find any reduction in ERK levels when giving the rats cannabidiol by itself. In turn, the researchers concluded that "... CBD and THC are a combination that operate best in unison."
I feel like this study totally supports something that many of us have heard a lot of anecdotal evidence about before. Having scientists prove and explain exactly why it is that cannabidiol helps reduce the negative feelings associated with too much THC, is going to be of great value to the Cannabis Community as time goes on.
I feel like as cannabis adoption around the world increases, inexperienced users will experience paranoia by the tens or hundreds of thousands, and knowing how to counteract it is definitely something that they are going to be interested in.
So shoutouts to the scientists at Canada's Western University for taking the time to feed their lab rats CBD and THC. Your findings are sure to benefit lots and lots of people.
And that's what's up with paranoia and CBD!
