For today's weed news we go to the great state of New York.
As you may have heard, New York's Governor had his heart set on bringing recreational weed to his state all year long. Unfortunately it did not happen. However, there seems to be a bit of good news for the state of New York for the year 2019 afterall...
That is because, Governor Andrew Cuomo just signed a new piece of legislation that makes possession of up to 2 oz of cannabis no longer a misdemeanor crime, but only a ticketable offense in the state of New York! So basically dude just decriminalized weed in New York people!
That's right, as of right now, getting caught with up to 28 grams or an ounce of cannabis will get you a ticket, a court date, and a $50 fine if convicted of having less than an ounce or a $200 fine for having more than one but less than 2 ounces of bud on you. Oh ya, and the cops will most likely take your stash, and probably smoke it themselves.
"For too long communities of color have been disproportionately impacted by laws governing marijuana and have suffered the lifelong consequences of an unfair marijuana conviction. Today is the start of a new chapter in the criminal justice system. By providing individuals a path to have their records expunged, including those who have been unjustly impacted based on their race or ethnicity, and reducing the penalty for unlawful possession of marijuana to a fine, we are giving many New Yorkers the opportunity to live better and more productive, successful and healthier lives," said Cuomo.
In addition to the governor's comments, Broome County Sheriff's Office Captain Kate Newcomb recently told WBNG that "...Being that this new legislation decriminalizes marijuana and changes it from a misdemeanor offense to a violation-level offense, it would not appear on your criminal history."
That's what the fuck I'm talking about! I feel like that last part is a very important detail that will save tens of thousands of New York's cannabis users a lot of troubles in the future. I for one just moved into a new apartment and as required by law, received a copy of the background check they ran on me. And although I completed all of my required penalties and jumped through all the hoops they told me to jump through for getting caught with less than a gram of weed some 11 years ago, that shit still shows up on my record with a comment in parentheses saying not to be regarded. But if it comes up on my record then it tells whoever is background checking me that I did have a cannabis violation even though I was told that if I complete the drug counseling and pay all the fees, the charge would not be part of my permanent record.
Thankfully I'm a medical patient and could give a fuck about what they think of my marijuana usage, but the fact that people caught with up to 2 oz of weed in New York will not receive a criminal charge is I personally think is fantastic.
So even though they didn't get recreational legalization done like they planned, I do commend Governor Cuomo for sticking to his guns and at least making some, quite major changes positive changes to the Cannabis situation in New York state.
Call me crazy, but I feel like next year you guys feeling to legalize that shit up there man.
But anyway, for now that's what's up in the great state of New York!
