It is no secret that the United States presidential election campaigns are in full swing. And it is also no secret that virtually every Democratic presidential hopeful has something positive to say about cannabis reform as part of their campaign promises.
Well, now it seems that Democrat Andrew Yang, who, according to a Monmouth University poll only has about 3% of the democratic vote at this point, is trying out a new fundraising/campaign strategy - selling cannabis themed merch!
That's right, Yang's campaign website has been featuring swag like "Math. Money. Marijuana." t-shirts with his campaign logo on them. He's also been pushing green hats with the word "MATH" on the front and a weed leaf on back. Those by the way are already completely sold out! Another pretty interesting item that Yang offers on his site are bumper stickers that just say "Legalize Marijuana" on them.
Although this approach does set him apart from his competition, he is still quite far behind people like Bernie Sanders, Joe Biden and Elizabeth Warren who each seem to have about 20% of likely Democratic voters' support.
If you ask me, I feel like the dude is actually serious about making some major positive changes in the way that our country handles Cannabis. He has been consistent with his message that America's leaders must find a way to even-out the discrepancies between state and federal cannabis laws, and has even promised that should he become president, he will pardon tens of thousands of so-called a "low-level, nonviolent" Cannabis offenders.
"We need to resolve the ambiguity and legalize marijuana at a federal level... This would improve safety, social equality, and generate tens of billions of dollars in new revenue based on legal cannabis businesses," reads part of Mr. Yang's campaign website.
And in a recent mass email sent out by the presidential hopeful's office, Andrew Yang said that "On my first day as president, I will pardon every person in prison for a low-level, nonviolent marijuana offense and I would high five them on their way out of jail."
That would not be a bad start to a presidency if you ask me. But although I feel like he's sincere about his motives and that his approach is logical, I really doubt that he has any real chance of actually becoming president.
What worries me however, is that it seems like some other Democratic presidential hopefuls, Kamala Harris in particular, are playing the weed card without actually meaning what they say. She for example has been going around talking about how she smokes weed nowadays while personally being responsible for thousands of people being incarcerated for Cannabis use and possession as a result of her actions as district attorney.
It's kind of funny to think that cannabis, and cannabis reform supporters might be the demographic that will ultimately sway the results of the election and decide who will be the next leader of the Free World.
But anyway, for now, that's what's up with presidential hopeful Andrew Yang!
