Every day as we crawl the internet’s tubes, looking for the latest cannabis legalization updates we run into news which makes us want to
headbang in our trusted iPad Pro. Of course, we are talking about the usual prohibitionist’s FUD we encounter, and also legalization gone wrong efforts.
Not your little fake news blogger update from some sweatshop in Eastern Europe or any emerging nation either, no we are talking news updates covered by major outlets with true reach which then go viral. The WTFUD news.
In this first installment, we have aggregated several WTF news items published across the world which make one want to shake their head in denial.
USA Can Deport Cannabis Smoking Immigrants
While this issue has been going on since quite some time and Vice have regularly reported about it, this week it was the turn of another favorite mainstream “progressive” media outlet, the Guardian to write about the topic Britons who legally smoke cannabis in the USA risk getting deported.
The article looks at the incompatibility between immigration and localized state-level marijuana legalization. Because marijuana is still a scheduled drug, smoking even in legal states may affect one’s immigration status potentially resulting in deportation.
Additionally, due to the federal prohibition people may also be restricted from visiting the USA for having smoked in the past, potentially even for prior use or shared texts about other scheduled substances. Because that’s how border police in the USA rolls.
Joe Biden Baffles with Legalization WTFUD
Good old Joe Biden, 2020 presidential candidate has once again spoken out about his position on marijuana. The former War on Drugs supporting VP and Senator had recently said he supported state-based legalization and frameworks.
> “... would allow states to continue to make their own choices regarding legalization and would seek to make it easier to conduct research on marijuana’s positive and negative health impacts by rescheduling it as a schedule 2 drug.”
But now Biden has taken his “naysayer” position to a whole new level and resorted to good old fashioned WTFUD. That’s right, all Biden could think of now to explain his position on federal legalization, or lack thereof, is that thousands of times beaten to death already “gateway drug” horse.
> “... the truth of the matter is, there has not been nearly enough evidence acquired as to whether or not it's a gateway drug.”
> — Joe Biden, sole Democratic Presidential candidate for 2020 not to support cannabis legalization outrightly
Of course, when you promote marijuana prohibition FUD like that, here at AlibiHQ we get a little agitated and may forget to also mention that the prohibitionist seems to take the neutral approach and supports further scientific research. Which given current status of research would be a win already.
> “It's a debate. Before I legalize it nationally, I want to make sure we know a lot more about the science behind it"
> "[it] is not irrational to do more scientific investigation to determine, which we have not done significantly enough, whether or not there are any things that relate to whether it's a gateway drug or not."
Newsflash, Joe no, cannabis is not more a gateway drug than bullets are a gateway to mass shootings. That old long debunked crap just doesn’t cut it anymore in 2019/20.
UK Continues to Baffle Hemp Farmers Can Grow but Not Legally Produce CBD Oil
The UK is regularly the ire of our rants here at AlibiHQ and with good reason. For one of the world’s nations priding itself in its advanced scientific knowledge, its legal framework often keeps baffling us by sheer stupidity.
The BBC’s Countrylife recently visited Fife, in Scotland, and as part of its reporting the crew visited a hemp farmer. Presenter Charlotte Smith stunned the viewers with her analysis of the legal situation surrounding hemp and CBD oil in the UK.
> “This [CBD oil] has become a multi million pound industry, but we’ve discovered that red tape is preventing British farmers from getting involved”
> “No UK farmer has ever been given a license to turn the bud into valuable CBD oil, and that red tape is locking farmers out of a market worth much more than traditional plants”
> — Charlotte Smith, BBC Countryfile presenter
Common sense was quickly expressed and found on social media.
Mexicans Need to Wait for Legal Weed
Sadly enough, the Mexican government has decided it has other priorities than following the country’s Supreme Court decisions and decided to request an extension to its obligation to legalize marijuana.
While legalized marijuana was supposed to be approved before the end of October 2019, Mexicans will now have to wait at least another 6 months.
Head over to @parslco who have an extensive look at what happened.
